Goda Sawako
The Museum of Art, Kochi, is pleased to present a retrospective exhibition of Goda Sawako.
Since her solo exhibition debut in 1965, Goda's creative activities have traversed a variety of media, including sculpture, painting, and photography, and since 1969 she has worked on stage design and original poster art for plays by Juro Kara and Shuji Terayama. However, in the 1990s, she began to break away from the previous style and shifted to unique creative practice based on self-reflection.
At a time when most artists were male, Goda's expression demonstrated high compatibility with the fields of fashion, film, and music and was supported by artists in various fields. On the other hand, Goda's work, which was not limited to a single style, and which kept a distance from contemporary art trends and critical discourse, has been difficult to place in the "history" of art and thus has been regarded as a personal hobby and is highly underrated.
This exhibition is the first retrospective of the artist's work since her death, and the largest ever held, featuring over 300 works and materials on display.
