From Impressionism to Richter

Pola Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Gerhard Richter, Vilhelm Hammershøi, Claude Monet et al.
In this exhibition, drawn from the Pola Museum of Art’s Western painting collection, we introduce masterpieces by painters who were active between the late 19th and early 20th centuries as well as some paintings by the contemporary master Gerhard Richter.

Impressionist painters of the late 19th century such as Claude Monet, Pierre Auguste Renoir, and Berthe Morisot depicted natural scenery and human figures with brilliant colors and quick brushstrokes in an effort to capture light. Meanwhile, Neo-Impressionists such as Georges Seurat and Post-Impressionists such as Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh evolved their own unique styles by developing Impressionist expressions through their explorations of color and form. Then, in the early 20th century, Pablo Picasso and Fernand Léger broke new ground with their free-wheeling and diverse artistic styles.

Light is also an important element to Richter, who has continually focused on the theme of “seeing.” We hope you enjoy these various works centering on the artists’ way of dealing with light.
