ARTPLAT@Bwac JAPAN proudly presents five-artist exhibition "Everyday Songs” featuring Aru Sunaga, Makiko Masutani, Hiroko Nakajima, Maiko Kasai, and Shizuka Mitsui.

This exhibition marks the second installment of a group show that began organically at this venue. The inaugural exhibition, “Layering, of Myself of Ourselves” took place late last year. While the five artists featured here differ in style and technique, their works share a subtle yet significant thread: each piece connects deeply with the fabric of daily life.

Aru Sunaga’s bold brushstrokes often depict motifs related to the act of "drawing" itself, such as brushes and torches. Her new piece, Wave Hands, takes inspiration from her discovery of fundamental, hand-based communication during her parenting journey. In contrast, Wake Up portrays a hand emerging from water. While both works explore the longing for connection—whether as a child reaching for a parent or as a hand seeking help from water—the emotions expressed by these hands diverge profoundly.

Makiko Masutani uses colored pencils to render objects that linger in her memory. It feels as though these recollections are reborn onto paper, as if filtered through her personal lens. Her warm tones often include playful juxtapositions—like a cactus alongside a glove—that evoke her sense of humor. These whimsical pairings remind us of the intricate interplay of elements and moments that compose our daily lives.

Hiroko Nakajima draws inspiration from mathematics, infusing abstract concepts with vivid colors to shape her artistic world. Her latest piece captures an endlessly expanding mathematical model, grounding it on canvas. While our time is finite, and past moments are irretrievable, mathematics—an inorganic language—offers simulations of infinite expansion. By shifting our perspective, Nakajima's work provides a glimpse of the eternal.

Recurring themes in Maiko Kasai's works include sleeping girls and animals. Their vulnerable expressions, bathed in ethereal light, invite viewers to project their own childhood memories onto them. Much like the concept of the “inner child,” Kasai’s works explore how unresolved emotions from youth shape our lives and how understanding them can bring healing. Her creations tenderly address the warmth of an external gaze upon our younger selves, leading these memories into a serene slumber.

In Shizuka Mitsui’s works, vibrant motifs like unicorns, jewels, ladies, and birds seem to possess a life of their own. Viewing her art feels akin to peering into a colorful kingdom. From the first glance, we are swept up by the rhythm and vibrancy of the imagery, surrendering to the palpable energy that pulses through her compositions.

The collection of works rooted in everyday life resonates like a song. Just as melodies and lyrics embody the emotions of their creators, these artworks allow viewers to overlay their feelings and memories, enriching their personal experiences. Titled “Everyday Songs,” this exhibition aspires to become a chapter in the lives of those who engage with it.
