Denzen Aodo
This is the first retrospective exhibition in the Tokyo metropolitan area in 17 years of Denzen Aodo (1748-1822), a Western-style painter active in the late Edo period.

Born in Sukagawa City in present-day Fukushima Prefecture, Aodo was a late bloomer who was discovered by Shirakawa feudal lord Sadanobu Matsudaira at the age of 47 and learned copperplate engraving techniques. His works are diverse, ranging from famous Edo landmarks and exotic scenes to illustrations for cutting-edge medical books and world maps.

This exhibition will present a comprehensive introduction to his copperplate engravings, which are characterized by remarkable precision and unique depictions of customs, and will also include representative Western-style paintings such as "Mount Asama" (Important Cultural Property), sketches, original prints, Western prints that Aodo may have seen, and works by his teachers and students to provide a comprehensive overview of his painting career.
