Chihiro Iwasaki
From Chihiro to today's children and the adults who were once children—

It has been 50 years since the picture book artist Chihiro Iwasaki passed away. During this half-century, the world has changed significantly, and the environment surrounding children has also transformed. What does Chihiro’s art have to say to us in this era?

Throughout 2024, the Chihiro Art Museum (Tokyo and Azumino) will explore Chihiro's work through the themes of "Play," "Nature," and "Peace," incorporating modern scientific perspectives. The art unit Plaplax will direct the exhibition, creating a new experience where both children and adults will be inspired not only to view but to participate.

More than 50 years ago, when Chihiro Iwasaki lived and painted in Shimoishigami, Tokyo, Japan was in the midst of rapid economic growth. In the name of development, trees were cut down, rivers were filled in, and the flora and fauna that had been observed diminished. Chihiro expressed her intention to depict "the various kinds of tenderness and beauty lost from present-day Japan" in her picture books, which may have also reflected her concerns about the loss of familiar nature.

Now, 50 years later, many living things are disappearing from the Earth daily. This exhibition aims to joyfully explore how we can live harmoniously with various forms of life other than humans through Chihiro's art.
