Autumn Special Exhibition: Tsutsugaki— The Beauty of Dyeing

The Japan Folk Crafts Museum Osaka
Finished
Tsutsugaki is a dyeing technique where paste in a tube is squeezed onto fabric to create patterns. The areas with paste are protected from dye, resulting in patterns when dipped in indigo. This technique, popular from the mid-Edo to the Meiji era, was used for celebratory cotton items like bedding, nightwear, and furoshiki. Tsutsugaki is distinctive for its hand-painted patterns and bold, lively compositions. This exhibition showcases about 60 pieces from dye artist Kumio Muraho’s collection.
