Art & Museum - Colors

Takasaki Museum of Art
Finished
Since ancient times, people have extracted colors from nature to paint pictures and adorn tools and vessels. Sometimes, colors were imbued with meanings or wishes. The color red, symbolizing life and warding off evil spirits, has been used historically. Blue, representing the sky, was considered the color of heaven in Christianity.

This exhibition focuses on color, aiming to explore it from various perspectives such as art history and natural sciences. Alongside paintings that prominently feature colors like red, blue, and yellow, the exhibition showcases various minerals and plants used as raw materials for pigments and dyes, as well as insects and birds adorned with "structural colors" that change appearance depending on the angle. Through materials spanning multiple fields, the exhibition introduces various topics related to color and its significance.
