Artists

Shiko Munakata
The works of Munakata frequently feature women as a central motif. However, Munakata’s art goes beyond the mere depiction of beautiful women, often portraying them as Buddhas or using the female form to convey scriptures, poetry, music, the artist's hometown, and nature. Munakata's celebration of women is rooted in the artist's admiration for the motherly figure of Aomori, where the artist grew up amidst poverty and was raised by a mother who had 15 children. Women are depicted vividly in woodblock prints and Japanese-style paintings, reflecting the artist's deep affection for the artist's mother and hometown. This exhibition aims to showcase the image of women that emerged from Munakata's love and tenderness received from the artist's beloved mother, intertwined with the majestic nature of Aomori that nurtured the artist's artistic spirit.
