Alfons Mucha - Muse in Art Nouveau

Chigasaki City Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Alfons Mucha
Alfons Mucha (1860-1939) was a painter who represented the Art Nouveau style, which flourished in Europe from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. The elegant depictions of women adorned with floral motifs that Mucha created continue to captivate many people.

Mucha, originally from the Czech Republic, became a sensation in late 19th-century Paris. His promotional poster for the play "Gismonda," starring the actress Sarah Bernhardt, became hugely popular, establishing his illustrious career as a painter but also as a designer. However, his love for his homeland, the Czech Republic, and the Slavic people never wavered. After returning to the Czech Republic at 50, he expressed his wish for peace in his homeland and the pride of the Slavic people through his works.

This exhibition delves into Mucha's life by showcasing wide-ranging works, including posters, decorative panels, design collections, postcards, stamps, banknotes, and product packaging.
