Akutagawa Ryunosuke and His Aesthetics, Two Forerunners—Natsume Soseki and Suga Torao

Kurume City Art Museum
Finished
The literature by Akutagawa Ryunosuke (1892–1927) shares a common feature with that of Natsume Soseki (1867–1916) in that the literary works by both writers are deeply related to fine art. Soseki, in his later years, detected Akutagawa’s talent, and Akutagawa looked up to Soseki as his mentor. Born in Kurume, Suga Torao (1864–1943) taught Akutagawa German at the First High School under the prewar education system and was close friends with Soseki. Soseki and Akutagawa respected Suga as a calligrapher, too. In this exhibition, with Akutagawa’s involvement with art as the pivot, the art world is viewed through Akutagawa’s eyes, and the rapport among the three is introduced.

The exhibit will be changed throughout the period.
