Akihisa Hirata
The Nerima Art Museum is hosting an exhibition showcasing the architectural world of architect Akihisa Hirata. Hirata's concept, "Architecture is about creating tangled spaces," is a consistent theme in his work. "Tangled spaces," coined by Hirata, differs from well-defined spatial domains and refers to the "entangled gaps," or the overlapping realms adjacent to all materials. This concept extends beyond the human world to include plants, animals, and cultures from different times and spaces, exploring the shared potential with a broader sense of life forms. It is also an attempt to envision a future where humans are liberated from the narrow definition of "human."

A representative example of Hirata's public architecture is the Ota City Museum and Library (2017), which received the Architectural Institute of Japan Prize in 2022. This building, beloved by the local community, embodies the tangled spaces concept by intertwining separated spaces and the inside and outside. Hirata has also worked on numerous residential and commercial facilities, creating spaces that reflect his philosophical theories and admiration for nature and life, showcasing his unique originality.

Now, the Nerima Art Museum is set to join this distinguished lineup of architectural works. The new museum, integrated with a library, is conceived under the architectural concepts of "21st-century Fujizuka / Cloud of Art / Mountain of Books." Drawing inspiration from the historical "Fujizuka" mounds in Nerima, the museum aims to connect "art and books" with the town and its people. While inheriting its 40-year legacy, the museum embarks on a new chapter under this innovative vision.

This exhibition will feature Hirata's previous architectural works, including the new Nerima Art Museum, ongoing projects, and future outlooks. Enjoy the worldview of Akihisa Hirata, a leading figure in contemporary architecture.
