A Permament Exhibition with Several Different Views

Shiga Museum of Art
Finished
"A Permanent Exhibition with Several Different Views" focuses on how artworks can be appreciated and experienced in various ways. Here, visitors are encouraged to take selfies with the artwork as backgrounds, touch the artwork or tactile diagrams, write their thoughts on paper and post them, or adjust their eye level (lower or higher than usual) to view the exhibits. This exhibition offers a range of perspectives that differ from traditional art museum experiences.

Behind this exhibition lies the challenge faced by museums like the Shiga Museum of Art in connecting with people who may find it difficult to engage with art institutions for various reasons. For instance, the typical display height of artwork (about 145 centimeters from the floor) can feel high for people in wheelchairs or many children. Moreover, since many artworks in museums appeal primarily to the visual senses, simply displaying them as-is can pose challenges for those with visual impairments. Some of the perspectives proposed in this exhibition serve as responses to these challenges.

Last September, the Shiga Museum of Art held an exhibition titled "The Museum with Diverse Perspectives," where the museum collaborated with people with disabilities and children during the preparation stages to incorporate ideas for new ways of appreciation born from dialogues. Visitors were able to experience these methods firsthand. This current exhibition inherits some of the consciousness and methodologies developed during that event into a permanent display.
