Artists

Shigeru Aoki, Hanjiro Sakamoto
Aoki Shigeru and Sakamoto Hanjiro sought their own styles amidst the period when Western-style painting was beginning to mature in Japan. Aoki attracted public attention from his youth, and his masterpiece, A Gift of the Sea (1904) has been positioned as an exemplar of Meiji Romanticism. Despite his stellar debut, he spent his last years wandering about Kyushu; his short life ended without his being able to return the central art world. Sakamoto was invited to Tokyo by Aoki and debuted there a few later years later than his friend; he later studied aboard. During his long life—Sakamoto lived to the age of 87—he applied himself steadily to his work, addressing many subjects, including horses, still lifes, and the moon and building a tranquil world view. Aoki and Sakamoto worked in different styles and had different personalities, but they encouraged each other in their work. This exhibition introduces both artists’ oeuvre and points at which their lives intersected.
