Artists

Tatsuo Miyajima
International artist Tatsuo Miyajima is renowned for his works using LED digital counters. Since the 1980s, his work has been based on the three concepts of “continuing to change,” “forming relationships,” and “continuing forever.” He has installed works in more than 250 locations in 30 countries. With digital numbers signifying the brilliance of life, his works display digits 1 through 9 in forever-repeating sequences that evoke the universal human themes of life and death.

For its 25th anniversary, Chiba City Museum of Art will hold the first major solo show for Tatsuo Miyajima at a metropolitan museum in 12 years. The exhibition posits 1995 as a pivotal year for the artist, when he created the work “Chi no Ten” (exhibited at the 1996 show “Tranquility”), restaged performances, and launched the “Revive Time: Kaki Tree Project.” With 1995 as its starting point, the exhibition considers expressions of space and time as the essence of Miyajima’s work and creates a chronicle of it up through the current year. Through LED displays, performance footage, and projects, this multi-layered show looks back on a quarter century of work by an artist searching for truth through confrontations of the physical and spiritual in this uncertain world.
