Trolls in the Park is an open air art exhibition held in Zenpukuji Park, in Suginami ward since 2002, with this year marking its 17th year. Since 2013 the program has extended into the wider neighborhood, presenting around Nishi-Ogikubo Station work in retro cafes, natural food shops and even a billiard hall.

The theme of 2018’s program is “Absence”. Our contemporary society is prone to focusing only on those who shout the loudest and have the biggest presence. But surely it is the power of art which is reflected in the ability to imagine what is not there, what was once here but is now lost, the margins and echoes born from nothing. “Absence” asks us to question the emotions and riches which arise from a seeming lack of presence.

Locations: Zenpukuji Park (Upper Pond), Youkobo Art Space, Yuyu Zenpukuji-kan, Suginami Momoi 4th Elementary School, Nishi-Ogikubo area shops
