This exhibition of new works by Muneteru Ujino features three elements: the video installations “Lives in Japan” and “Dempamachi (Radiowave Quarter)” based on Ujino’s “Plywood Shinchi” presented at the 2017 Yokohama Triennale, a giant wall drawing series inspired by wire diagrams, and “Plywood City Stories 2,” a video installation relating Ujino’s points of departure for creating his works.
In this show Ujino critically reconsiders the coexistence of Japanese and foreign cultures in postwar Japan. These works reflect the sense of dissonance he felt as a child seeing braun tube TVs on tatami mats and the encroachment of an industrial transparency observed in household items like Tupperware. These elements contrasted with the dark, shadowy environments favored by lacquer and ceramics described in In Praise of Shadows, an authoritative text on Japanese aesthetics.
