Fascinating is the perfect word for these Momoyama tea utensils: There’s Shigaraki, Bizen, and Iga ware with their bold spatula cuts and distortions; Shino ware with its strong iron decorations on white glaze; Oribe ware with its variety of shapes and glazes: and Karatsu ware with its free expression of motifs. These ceramics created in the sixteenth and early seventeenth century Momoyama era brim with compelling magnetism. The Nezu Museum presents artifacts recently excavated in Kyoto, as well as tea utensils that have been handed down over the generations. Examining them in terms of production and distribution, this show offers the latest view of the world of Momoyama tea utensils.
