Delight in the uniquely rich expressiveness of Japanese picture books from the last 100 years. In the 1910s, several Japanese magazines for children, such as “Kodomo no Tomo (The Children’s Companion)” and “Akai Tori (Red Bird),” were launched. Highly artistic illustrated magazines and picture books emerged in the prosperous post-World War I years, and following World War II, picture books enjoyed a resurgence thanks to the contributions of distinctive artists like Chihiro Iwasaki. Roughly 120 superb works by 58 representative artists are introduced here.
