A Butterfly’s Dream

A Butterfly’s Dream blurs the boundary between image and reality, replication and original. Syuhei Oono conjoins tree branches with resin and features butterflies with artificial patterns upon their wings. Questioning Darwin’s theory of evolution based upon survival by adaption, mimicking the colors and forms of an organism’s natural environment, Oono points to the possibility of such evolution towards camouflaging incorporating manmade patterning. And when branches appear to form the shapes of stars and hearts is this discerned by human or natural intention?
Tetsuto Mizuguchi layers canvases with numerous strips of tape. At first glance these appear to be a disordered jumble but upon closer inspection one realizes this is not real tape but in fact painted to appear as tape, breaking our division between original and reproduction in a feat of the hypereal.
