Toeko Tatsuno
The major Japanese abstract painter Toeko Tatsuno displayed artistic talent from a young age and specialized in oil painting at Tokyo University of the Arts. She continued to paint until her death last year.

Tatsuno’s works are characterized by their uses of color and form. She was inspired by small memories from fragments of day-to-day life, which she described as “encounters with the best colors and forms that come from me.” She sometimes gave shape to images of herself extending back to subconscious dimensions. In an interview she once stated, “I want to express the biggest things in the smallest way possible.”

Recurring motifs of simple shapes such as ovals and square towers in powerfully vibrant colors that enfold the viewer in their warmth are perhaps what Tatsuno attained from her long journey into the subconscious. Eight of her works, including two small oil paintings, are on display.
