Today, it is not the regal and exquisite garments of princesses and other members of the royalty that impress us. Rather, the ordinary everyday attire of common girls make the strongest impression. Even the best of farmers’ clothes were usually regarded as being of low quality compared to those of city dwellers. Yet their passion for beauty was no less powerful than that of the fashionable urban set.
Starting at the age of 5 or 6, farmer girls sewed their own clothes with elaborate embroidery to prepare for their future marriage, proudly wearing their handmade party wear during festivals or meetings.
Although hemp is considered luxurious today, it used to be regarded as a poor farmer’s fabric. Their clothes were made of fat hemp fibers, and had a very rough texture. Repeated washing and dyeing caused that texture to become much denser, smoother and softer, however, which allowed better absorption of sweat in summer and heat insulation in winter: Hemp clothes therefore showed their real worth after many years of use.
