"Hokusai, Hiroshige, Toyokuni III -- Challenge after the 60th birthday" Exhibition

Ota Memorial Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Hokusai Katsushika, Hiroshige Utagawa, Toyokuni Utagawa III et al.
In 2007, many baby-boomers are facing retirement and starting to plan for the further future. Supposedly life expectancy is 80 years today, which means that lots of people are just starting their new life.

During the Edo period, on the contrary, the average life expectancy was quite short. While many people were ending their lives in their 50s or 60s, there were many Ukiyo-e artists who continued to produce artwork even after the age of 60, experimenting with new techniques and forms of expression.

This exhibition focuses on what Hokusai Katsushika, Hiroshige Utagawa, Toyokuni Utagawa III and other Ukiyo-e masters made in their 60s, 70s and later years. Powerful challenges made by these artists in their last years are introduced.
