100 Years of Paintings at Tama Zenshoen

The National Hansen's Disease Museum
Finished
Approximately 100 years ago, on October 31, 1923, the first art exhibition, "The First Painting Exhibition," opened in the chapel of the Prefectural Tama Zensho Hospital (currently National Sanatorium Tama Zenshōen). This exhibition became the first event to showcase paintings created by residents of the hospital. Subsequently, the activities of the painting circle formed during wartime intensified after the war, evolving from group efforts to individual artistic pursuits in recent years. The painting activities, amidst the hardships of forced isolation for leprosy patients and recoverers, served as a bond between the artists, artists and staff, and eventually, between the artists and society.

This exhibition provides an overview of the 100-year journey of Tama Zenshoen's painting activities, starting from the painting exhibition, and introduces numerous paintings, including those being publicly displayed for the first time, along with related materials.
