The Suiboku Museum, Toyama was opened in 1999, with a primary focus on exhibiting modern Japanese ink paintings, or “suibokuga.” The word “suiboku” in the museum’s name doesn’t just mean “ink paintings,” but evokes the fullness of Japanese aesthetics. The building was constructed in the Japanese style, a single story with a garden and a tea room, and is intended to be a serene place where visitors can experience the richness of nature. In the permanent exhibition rooms, you can see works by leading artists like Takeuchi Seihō, Yokoyama Taikan, Hishida Shunsō, as well as others with a connection to Toyama Prefecture such as Kaho Akira, Takamura Gyūjin, and Iwasaki Hajin. Exhibition rooms 1 and 2 are used for a wide range of special exhibitions focusing on Japanese arts and crafts.

The Takaoka Art Museum opened in September 1994 with the aim of creating an open museum that combines traditions and creativity. The museum holds special exhibitions focusing on arts, crafts, and metal works.
Takaoka City has produced many artists and works of art in the fields of fine arts and crafts. Based on this, the Takaoka Art Museum collects and preserves works from all fields of arts and crafts, including metalwork, lacquerware, painting, and sculpture, by artists who are closely associated with the local area or who have greatly influenced the local arts and crafts.

With the grand vision of creating a “Glass Art City, Toyama” Toyama Glass Art Museum opened in August 2015. It was built in Toyama Kikari, a composite facility, which is also occupied by Toyama City.
Kengo Kuma, a world-renowned architect, designed the museum building. The exterior of the building resembles the ever-changing Mt.Tateyama and was built with a combination of different materials, such as granite, glass, and aluminum. The interior, on the other hand, makes full use of louvers that use materials from Toyama Prefecture to create an atmosphere of warmth and openness.
The Art Museum holds permanent exhibitions, such as the collection exhibition showcasing the contemporary glass artwork collected by Toyama City. In the murals of the display rooms and the library, there is the “Glass Art Passage” that displays artwork from artists associated with Toyama. Additionally, on the 6th floor, there is the “Glass Art Garden” that displays installations by the studio of the great master of contemporary glass artwork, Dale Chihuly. In special exhibitions, a variety of art styles are introduced with a focus on contemporary glass artwork after the 1950s.　


TOYAMA KIRARI Exterior

Since its opening in April 1995, the Nizayama Forest Art Museum has been attracting attention as an art museum in a renovated hydroelectric power station, which was constructed in 1925 and intended to be demolished but preserved by Hokuriku Electric Company. 
Rebuilt to maintain as many traces of the power stations as possible, a red brick building is a place where old Taisho-era architecture meets new contemporary art. The museum holds unique exhibitions in its special atmosphere that stirs the artistic imagination.


 Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design exhibits designs from the masters of 20th-century art, including posters and chairs. Exhibits are changed about four times a year, so visitors can always enjoy fresh encounters.

The museum also holds various special exhibitions that give visitors a sense of art and design. At the atelier, artists hold public productions and workshops. Children and adults alike can experience art in an interactive way by "seeing," "creating," and "learning.

On the Onomatopoeia Rooftop, visitors can enjoy playground equipment designed by graphic designer Taku Sato, inspired by Onomatopoeia. The seasonal views of the Tateyama mountain range and the Fugan Canal Kansui Park from the rooftop are spectacular.
