Yumeji Takehisa
Yumeji Takehisa (1884-1934) expressed his longing for his hometown where he spent time with his family and old friends through his paintings and poetry, as seen in his book "Furusato no Yume" (Dreams of Hometown). The important theme common to Yumeji's works, "nostalgia," continues to resonate with many people even 90 years after his passing.

Although born in Oku-cho, Setouchi City, Okayama Prefecture, Takehisa had to leave his hometown at 16 due to family circumstances and began his career as an illustrator in Tokyo. Takehisa's depiction of "Yumeji-style beauties" became a sensation, and he gained popularity for his diverse expressions in painting, design, poetry, and prose. His works were deeply influenced by memories of his beloved mother and the people of his hometown. This exhibition explores Takehisa's inner world by tracing his childhood memories in Okayama through his paintings, poetry, and tanka. Depicting his hometown and children, this exhibition will trace the origin of his creativity.

Commemorating Yumeji's 140th birthday in 2024, the Yumeji Kyōdo Bijutsukan (Yumeji Art Museum) collection will tour nationwide from June.
