Artists

Yozo Hamaguchi, Kagai Hatano
Cherry Blossoms Floating in the Quiet Darkness.

Yozo Hamaguchi's (1909-2000) copperplate prints are notable for their impressive gradations of darkness that contain light. This exhibition will display his copperplate prints alongside the "Orchid and Bamboo Silver Folding Screen" by Nanga painter Kagai Hatano (1863-1944), who had connections with Hamaguchi's father. The silver folding screen, adorned with bamboo and spring orchids against a backdrop of clear streams and towering rocks, captures even the rising mist and the fragrance of the orchids through its shades of black, creating a striking sense of presence. Critics have frequently noted the influence of ink-wash paintings on Hamaguchi's work.

This exhibition invites the viewer to explore the deeper connections that transcend their painting styles, and to appreciate the works of these two artists, resonating across eternal space and time, particularly focusing on the gradations of black.
