Artists

Yoshikazu Takai
This exhibition introduces illustrations and three-dimensional works by Yoshikazu Takai, focusing on the picture book series "Yokai Village." In ancient times, when mysterious phenomena or disasters occurred, people feared them as the work of yokai (monsters). From there, various characteristics and anecdotes of yokai have been created to convey lessons from daily life to future generations. The cute and unique "yokai" depicted by Takai are modeled after yokai that appear in old books teaching rules to follow and how to interact with others.

Additionally, in Takahama City, Aichi Prefecture, the central hub of Sanshu tiles, visitors can see impressive tiles everywhere. Decorative tiles such as oni-gawara and shachihoko are special tiles crafted by onigawara artisans called "onishi," and they are imbued with wishes to protect homes from disasters such as fire prevention. In this exhibition, along with the picture book "Yokai Village," slightly eerie roof ornaments will be displayed.
