In September 2016, the northern region of Okinawa Prefecture, known as Yanbaru, was designated as the 33rd national park in Japan, named "Yanbaru National Park." In response to this designation and the growing interest in tourism in the northern region, the "Yanbaru Art Festival" was organized, becoming the first cross-municipality art event in Okinawa Prefecture.

The festival, held six times in the past, centered around Ogimi Village and included participating municipalities such as Nago City, Motobu Town, Kunigami Village, Higashi Village, and Nakijin Village. It featured art exhibitions and events, attracting around 300,000 visitors. Attendees came not only from various parts of Japan but also from overseas, including Asia and Western countries. Through art, the festival successfully showcased the charm of Yanbaru to audiences both locally and internationally.

In July 2021, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee decided to register "Amami Oshima, Tokunoshima, Northern Okinawa, and Iriomote Island" as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. This increased attention on the area, and the Yanbaru Art Festival continues to be held annually, aiming to promote the attractiveness of Yanbaru worldwide through art, which remains a key focus.

Venues for the festival include Ogimi Village's Former Shiogaya Elementary School (Ogimi Utility Center), Yanbaru Sake Brewery, Okuma Private Beach & Resort, Hetona Shopping Street, Oriental Hotel Okinawa Resort & Spa, Kanucha Resort, Aguu Statue in front of Nago Civic Hall, Hoshino Resort BEB5 Okinawa Sesoko, and Hotel Anteroom Naha.
