Uesugi and Falcons and Horses

Yonezawa City Uesugi Museum
Finished
The relationship between falcons, horses, and humans has a long history. Falcons and Haniwa figurines of falconers, horses, and horse attendants excavated from ancient tombs dating back to the 6th century remind us of this long connection. They also indicate a strong link to those in power. Throughout history, falcons and horses have been closely associated with power, symbolizing their role in historical contexts. This exhibition explores the relationship between the Uesugi clan's samurai power during the Sengoku and Edo periods and falcons and horses.

Falcons and horses played important roles not only in the relationships between the daimyo and the Muromachi shogunate, the Toyotomi government, and the Edo shogunate but also among the daimyo themselves. Falconry was widely cherished by the samurai, and horseback riding was essential not only for travel but also for warfare. Therefore, the skills in falconry and horseback riding were highly valued, and skilled falcons and renowned horses were in demand. Techniques for breeding and treating falcons and horses were also important.

During the Sengoku and Edo periods, folding screens depicting falcons and horses were frequently produced, reflecting the societal trend where the samurai held absolute power. The national treasure "Uesugi-bon Rakuchu Rakugai-zo Byobu" also features various depictions of falcons and horses.
