Rokuro Taniuchi
Rokuro Taniuchi, known as the "painter of nostalgia," captured nostalgic scenes of the Showa era and childhood memories. His most famous works are the cover illustrations for Shukan Shincho, which delighted readers for 26 years starting from the magazine’s inaugural issue in 1956.

Already a popular artist at the time, Taniuchi took on the task of illustrating the covers of the monthly PR magazine Inadayori, published by Ina Seito (now Inax, part of Lixil), for two years starting in 1963. He created 24 tile illustrations depicting seasonal scenes, each accompanied by a short essay in which he shared his thoughts and interests related to the subject matter.

These seasonally rich artworks were crafted three-dimensionally by layering various materials such as tiles of different colors and shapes, thick paper, plywood, and plastic thin sheets (P-tiles) onto a tile background.

This exhibition presents 10 original tile illustrations from the series, which adorned the covers of Ina Dayori, alongside photographs and other materials from the collection of the Yokosuka Museum of Art, home to the Rokuro Taniuchi Pavilion. Additionally, you can view sample sheets and catalogs of the tiles used by Ina Seito in Taniuchi's works.

As Inax celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, enjoy this unique "tile art series," the only one of its kind created by Taniuchi, which marks a significant chapter in the company’s history.
