Taikan Yokoyama
Taikan Yokoyama (1868-1958) was born in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture, in the year of the Meiji Restoration. After completing the Tokyo Fine Arts School as the first graduating class, he participated in the establishment of the Japan Art Institute led by his teacher Tenshin Okakura, was a member of the jury for the first Ministry of Education Art Exhibition, and after the death of his teacher, played a central role in reviving the Institute, and became the first recipient of the Order of Cultural Merit.

Among the various subjects Yokoyama painted during his 70-year career, his works depicting natural landscapes such as mountains and seascapes are widely known. As Yokoyama said, "I must never forget that a picture must be painted from the heart," and this attitude of painting from the heart the natural forms that left an impression on his eyes is expressed in his works as his individuality. In the process of painting, Yokoyama experimented with a variety of techniques, such as fuzzy or one-dimensional blurring, to express light and air.

This exhibition introduces Taikan Yokoyama's landscapes, including Mt. Fuji, from the collection of the Hirosawa Art Museum in Chikusei City, Ibaraki Prefecture.
