The Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923

Kanagawa Prefectural Museum Of Cultural History
Finished
The Great Kanto Earthquake, which struck on September 1, 1923, was a massive earthquake estimated to have a magnitude of 7.9 on the Richter scale. The ensuing fires, landslides, and tsunami caused extensive damage mainly in the Kanto region. In particular, Kanagawa Prefecture, which was located right at the epicenter of the quake, suffered heavy human and material losses. On the other hand, from the perspective that the urban framework leading to the present day was formed in the process of reconstruction, the Great East Japan Earthquake can be seen as one of the starting points of the modern era.

The main building of the former Yokohama Seikin Bank, which is part of the museum's old building, is a living witness to the Great Kanto Earthquake. This year, which marks the 100th anniversary of the Great Kanto Earthquake, the exhibition will focus on the people who faced the catastrophe and tried to find peace of mind while facing their fears.
