Tenjin-sama Depicted

Dazaifu Tenmangu
Finished
Sugawara no Michizane (845-903), widely renowned as an outstanding politician and one of the greatest cultural figures in Japanese history, concluded his pure and noble life in Dazaifu. The establishment of a small shrine called "Shokiyo" over his grave marked the founding of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. Since then, Michizane has been revered as Tenjin-sama.

Depictions of Tenjin-sama as an object of faith can be broadly categorized into two types: the traditional Japanese "Sokutai Tenjin-zo" wearing formal Heian aristocratic attire, often depicted with plum and pine trees that have a connection to him, and the "Totou Tenjin-zo" wearing Chinese-style attire, symbolizing the legend of Tenjin-sama traveling to the continent, receiving Zen teachings, and being granted a kasaya robe.

This time, the exhibition will showcase a selection of over 40 Tenjin-sama images from a collection of more than 140, spanning 600 years from the 14th century of the Nanboku-cho period to the 20th century.

In addition, a masterpiece rediscovered after 82 years – the "Sansui Kachochizu Byobu" painted by Sansetsu Kano will be unveiled. This extraordinary painter, born in Hizen, gained attention for his imaginative style preceding Jakuchu Ito and Rosetsu Nagasawa.
