Ryusei Kishida
Ryusei Kishida was a painter active during the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods. The "Reiko Portraits" that he created using his daughter as a model are widely known and loved as representative paintings of Japan's modern era. On the other hand, the image of Reiko as a human being is almost unknown to the world.
Reiko was an actress in the theater club of "Shinshiki-mura," founded by Saneatsu Mushanokoji, while simultaneously exhibiting her paintings at the Kokuga-kai (National Painting Society) and at the Shuhokai, the first women's painting organization in Japan.
This exhibition features three generations of portraits of Reiko- by her father Ryusei, her daughter Natsuko, and by Reiko herself.
On the 60th anniversary of Reiko's death, this exhibition will introduce her life as a daughter, a parent, and a painter through her works and words.
