Shusaku Arakawa
Shusaku Arakawa is known for his unique, vividly colored architecture such as the Site of Reversible Destiny in Yoro and the Mitaka Reversible Destiny Lofts. These distinctive colors have emerged through the development of his artworks. In late 1950s Japan, Arakawa made a name for himself with his "coffin" series, which featured concrete blocks laid in boxes. After moving to the United States in 1961, he began creating diagrams (schematic paintings) that used pale, varied colors to outline objects and trace their movements, significantly changing his style. This evolved into the "Mechanism of Meaning," unveiled in 1970, where the colors on the canvas themselves became elements of thought experiments. In his later experiential works and architecture, color became a fundamental aspect of the space.

This exhibition focuses on his "No! Says the Signified Untitled" series, created after the "Mechanism of Meaning," where vivid colors coexist with contrasting gray tones. It offers a renewed opportunity to explore how Arakawa used color to signify meaning in his works.
