Shintoists of the Meiji Era: Former Shogunate Vassal Akiyama Terue and His Materials

National Museum of Japanese History
Until Jul 27
The materials introduced in this special exhibition were left behind by Akiyama Terue (1843-1902), a scholar of Japanese classics and Shintoism, who served as a police officer under the Edo magistrate's office at the end of the Edo period and served as a priest at shrines around the country after the Meiji Restoration. The collection includes documents, books, paintings, and calligraphy, and in addition to documents related to the magistrate's office from his ancestors' generation, it is notable for a large number of documents related to Japanese classics and Shintoism, as Terue studied under Maeda Natsukage and Hirata Kanetane. There are also many letters sent by scholars of Japanese classics and poets with whom he was friends. We will trace the concrete steps of the lives of former shogunate officials, whose lives changed significantly around the time of the Meiji Restoration. The materials related to Akiyama Terue were recently donated to our museum, and this is an opportunity to show them off.
