The Nara Prefectural Museum of Art has received many donations of unique private collections such as the Yoshikawa Collection and the Yura Collection. This exhibition focuses on the Ohashi Collection of avant-garde paintings from the 1950s to 1970s.

Some collectors prefer to collect abstract paintings and avant-garde art, which some viewers may not understand. Yoshikazu Ohashi (1896-1978), a businessman and chemist in the Kansai region, was one such collector. This exhibition will allow visitors to experience the "pleasure of looking at paintings" and "pleasure of collecting paintings" of one collector and to experience a part of the art of the 1950s and 1960s, which underwent major changes after the Second World War.

Ohashi actively collected contemporary Japanese art from the late 1950s to the early 1970s while founding and running Ohashi Chemical Industry Co. He also supported Japanese art as a collector and patron by donating funds to the Tokyo University of the Arts in 1953 to establish the "Ohashi Prize" and to support students who aspired to become painters. Ichiro Hariu, one of Japan's leading art critics, introduced Ohashi as "a collector with insight and conviction" in his book. His collection of approximately 2,000 works was kindly donated by his bereaved family to the Nara Prefectural Museum of Art, the National Museum of Art, Osaka, and his alma mater, the Kyoto Institute of Technology, where over 500 works are in the museum's collection. This exhibition will consist of approximately 100 works selected from the museum's collection, along with a few pieces from the museum's other collections, as shown below.
