Repel Evil Spirits - Block Invisible Enemies with Clothes!

Bunka Gakuen Costume Museum
Finished
In an age without scientific knowledge, it was believed that illness and death were caused by invisible "demons," and clothing, the boundary between the human body and the outside world, was required to protect against these "demons.

People used clothing to protect themselves from "invisible enemies" and to wish for a better life, for example, by displaying patterns on clothing that were believed to have the power to drive away "demons" and attract good luck, or by creating boundaries with ornaments.

This exhibition explores the role of clothing in warding off evil and inviting good fortune as seen in folk costumes and ornaments from Japan and other parts of the world.
