Regnum Imaginarium - Realm of the Marvelous and Uncanny

Fukuoka City Museum
Finished
In Europe and the Middle East, such mysterious but possibly real "wonders" as dog-headed people and unicorns have been passed on as a form of knowledge related to nature. In East Asia, "kaii" was created by the mind's attempt to explain unusual and bizarre phenomena and objects.

This exhibition introduced the diversity of creatures of the world's imagination through approximately 350 paintings, books, sculptures, and ritual implements related to mermaids, dragons, kappa, tengu, lions, and other wonders and monsters believed to exist on the boundary between this world and another, held in the collections of the National Museum of Ethnology and other locations in Kyushu. The exhibition also explores the source of the power of human imagination and creativity, focusing on the workings of human psychology and thought, and the nature of representation.
