The Museum of Fine Arts, Gifu
Finished

Artists

Hosui Yamamoto
Hosui Yamamoto (1850–1906), a pioneer of Western-style painting in Japan, was born in Gifu. Studying under Goseda Horyu, Yamamoto mastered oil painting techniques in France. After returning to Japan, Yamamoto played a significant role in forming art groups like the Meiji Bijutsu-kai and Hakuba-kai, served as a war artist during the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese Wars, and engaged with various art forms. This exhibition, a major retrospective in about 30 years, highlights key works from early to late in Yamamoto's career, with contributions from collectors both in Japan and abroad.
