Naoshi Horie
The Iwate Museum of Art collects works by artists associated with Iwate from the Meiji period to the present day and exhibits the collection in three rooms: the permanent exhibition room, the Yorozu Tetsugoro Gallery, and the Matsumoto Shunsuke and Funakoshi Yasutake Gallery while changing exhibits four times a year according to season. The collection is on display in three rooms.

This term's exhibition features Naoshi Horie (1897-1935), a sculptor from Morioka City who was active from the late Taisho period to the early Showa period. Although Horie died early at the age of 38 and left few works, his expression, which approached the essence of the subject with a quiet gaze, has greatly influenced the next generation of sculptors. This exhibition will display 16 sculptures along with related materials, tracing the transition of Horie's work and exploring the appeal of his art. The works of Manji Takahashi III and Yasumasa Kikkawa, who were close to Horie, as well as those of Yasutake Funakoshi and Sakae Terui, who studied Horie's work, are also introduced.

In addition, the permanent exhibition room features large paintings by Takeshi Honda, Makoto Hasegawa, Yoshihisa Uda, and Kenichi Hosokawa, all of whom are active in the Tohoku region, as well as Iwate landscape paintings by a variety of artists. Many of the works feature motifs of the city of Morioka, as introduced in the special feature article "Morioka Art Map - Paintings by Morioka Painters - Touring with the Director" in the 42nd issue of the museum's newsletter "APPRILLE. Please enjoy them along with the commentary of "Applilée".
