Microcosmos: A Small Room Inside the Box

Doll House Museum Hakone
Until Apr 21

Artists

Rio Umezawa
In Japan, the trend of miniature worlds and dollhouses has been flourishing, focusing on intricate artistry and imaginative scenes. At the Hakoniwa / Doll House Museum Hakone, Rio Umezawa showcases an assemblage technique that combines small artworks and collected French antiques within uniquely aged boxes. Assemblage was popularized by Jean Dubuffet in the 1950s to differentiate it from collage. Umezawa's pieces transport viewers to an alternate realm, merging everyday items with artistry. Inspired by global experiences, Umezawa's works create a miniature world that expands consciousness like a small microcosm.
