Masato Mori
This marks Masato Mori first exhibition at Nanzuka Underground since 2021. A concurrent exhibition titled "Snaker" will be held at INS studio in Shibuya Dogenzaka from June 21st.

This exhibition is a sequel to "Lonsdaleite Year," which was held in 2021, and it presents the latest chapter in Mori's illustrated diary series chronicling his daily life in Tokushima. Drawing inspiration from Shigeru Mizuki's theory of happiness, which suggests "continuously doing what one cannot help but do," Mori intensifies his creative activities by elevating his interests and concerns to the level of passion. Mori crystallizes his experiences, such as collecting insects like butterflies and stag beetles, playing in rivers to catch shrimp and small fish, coexisting with animals like cats, snakes, and crows, nurturing various plants like wisteria, roses, and sunflowers, and transforming his inherited single-family home into an entire artwork.

In his latest works, Mori's friendship with two DJs, 5ive and Pawder, influences his exploration of the correlation between painting and underground music. Through the harmony of individual sounds that generate grooves in dance music, Mori, who values color above all else in his creative endeavors, finds inspiration to view the fusion of colors as a harmony of sounds. This realization prompts Mori to explore the interconnectedness between painting and music, rhythm and brushstrokes, melody and composition. The "Snaker" exhibition, which traces Mori's 10-year collaboration with 5ive at INS studio, complements Mori's journey by showcasing his footsteps.

Delving into the idea that colors, like sounds, can evoke pleasure or surprise, Mori experiments with several approaches in his new works. In the piece "Unko no Bandou," chosen by Mori himself as the main visual, he challenges a more abstract and experimental composition, resulting in a harmonious display of unexpectedly beautiful and vibrant colors, defying expectations based on its title. This experimental approach leads Mori to create over half of his new works using oil paints.

Mori describes his ideal painting as a canvas where "the paint and brush leap onto the canvas freely, joyfully, and dance as if born from magic, just like a story in a picture book." This exhibition provides a rare opportunity to experience Mori's unique talent and artistic journey.

In this exhibition, Mori will present over 15 new paintings on large canvases, as well as three bronze self-portrait sculptures. The opening reception for the exhibition will be held on Saturday, May 25th, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm, with the artist in attendance.
