This exhibition is an annual event to fully appreciate the architectural charm of the former Asaka Palace (now the main building of the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum), completed in 1933. Each year, the museum sets a theme and explores various aspects of the building. This time, the focus is on one of the building's highlights—lighting.

In the 1920s, while staying in Paris, France, Prince and Princess Asaka were captivated by the Art Deco style, which was at its peak then. Upon their return to Japan, they constructed their residence using the most advanced technologies and highest quality materials, incorporating the essence of Art Deco. The French decorative artist Henri Rapin was responsible for the interior decoration of the main rooms, while the engineers from the Imperial Household Ministry's Bureau of Construction handled the overall design, resulting in a blend of Japanese and French design. Although the building is now used as a museum, it has undergone minimal changes since its completion, preserving its original state and earning it the designation of an Important Cultural Property of Japan.

The lighting fixtures on the ceilings and walls are particularly striking elements of the interior space of the former Asaka Palace. Many of these fixtures, featuring meticulous materials and details, were custom-made for the residence, enhancing its splendor and uniqueness. This exhibition delves into the charm of the former Asaka Palace through explanations and materials related to the lighting in each room, also displaying lamps from the same era. Additionally, the curtains of the main building's windows will be opened to let in natural light, allowing visitors to enjoy recreated displays using furniture and furnishings from the palace era.
