Kyosui Kawanabe
Kyosui Kawanabe (1868-1935) was a female Japanese painter active from the Meiji era to the early Showa era. Daughter of Kyosai Kawanabe, a Kano school painter who painted ukiyo-e and other works unrestricted by any school, Kyosui learned painting at an early age, having been taught by her father, Kyosai, when she was only five years old. After her father's death, Kyosui took over and finished the unfinished work left behind by Kyosai. Kyosui's school was not limited to the Kano school, but she also absorbed the Tosa and Sumiyoshi schools and created a world of elegant and graceful paintings, especially those of gentle beauties.

Although Kyosui has often been overshadowed by her father, the historical novel "Hoshi ga Ochite, Nao" (The Star Falls, Yet), written by Hitoko Sawada in 2021 and awarded the 165th Naoki Prize, has shifted attention to the daughter.

This is the first exhibition of Kyosui's work to showcase the full scope of her painting career, bringing together work by the artist, who inherited her father's painting techniques and left her own mark as a Japanese-style painter.
