Artists

Kazumi Makino
This exhibition, part of a series introducing local artists, will feature Kazumi Makino. Born in Saku and grandson of the Southern-style painter Makino Kansan (1893-1973), Makino recalls that during his high school years, he "could only think about becoming a painter." In April 1970, he entered the Tokyo University of the Arts, majoring in Japanese painting, where he met his professor, the Japanese painter Kazuho Hieda (1920-2021).

Makino used the Sogakai, an art society to which Hieda belonged, as a platform for presenting his work. At the Sogakai, which was known for its free experimentation with Japanese painting, Makino explored new expressions on the canvas by incorporating modern sculptural techniques such as Assemblage, rather than being confined by traditional methods.

The 40 works chosen by Makino represent his artistic journey, each being an "independent form detached from the shapes of reality."
