Artists

Jakuchu Ito, Isson Tanaka et al.
The Okada Museum of Art, which will celebrate its 10th anniversary in the fall of 2023, has selected four painters who have been particularly popular in past exhibitions and will hold two exhibitions of two painters each in two parts.

The first part of the exhibition features Jakuchu Ito of the Edo period and Isson Tanaka of the Showa period. Both of these painters have experienced a surge in popularity in recent years. Both painters remained celibate throughout their lives, and both devoted their lives to painting. Their similarities can be seen in their styles, such as their thorough sketching, their vivid colors, and the tension that pervades their paintings. Because of their way of life and their works as a whole, Tadashi Kobayashi, the director of the museum, refers to Tanaka as "the Showa Jakuchu”.

This exhibition will show various combinations of paintings by the two artists- colorful paintings Ito painted during Ito's 30s and 40s and Tanaka's representative works from his time living on Amami-Oshima, their respective ink paintings, and drawings of the same kind of birds. This diverse exhibition will showcase approximately 40 works, including 7 by Ito and 7 by Tanaka, works by related artists, and traditional flower-and-bird paintings on folding screens.

One of Ito Jakuchu's works, "Roosters in the Snow," will be on display from March 10 to June 4; two of Isson Tanaka's works are in a private collection; the others are in the museum's collection.
