The upcoming Special Exhibition "Hirayama Ikuo's Meditation and the Nihonga (Japanese-style Painting) Artists of the Showa Era (1926-1989)" will be on view from December 11,2024-March 30,2025.

Nihonga, or modern-style Japanese painting, developed as an art movement in the Meiji Era (1868-1912) as Japan opened up to the outside world while trying to preserve the classical artistic traditions. All Nihonga artists in this exhibition were born in or after the Meiji Era and achieved eminence mainly in the Showa Era (1926-1989). Each exhibited artwork, selected from our collection and on view for the first time, delicately expresses the artists' interest and love for the varied subject matter and their genuine and gentle gaze.

Hirayama Ikuo's Meditation is part of his Buddha's biography series and illustrates a dreamlike scene of Śākyamuni in meditation, as he attains enlightenment under the bodhi tree in Buddhagayā. It is followed by the paintings of the sun by Yokoyama Taikan and Kodama Kibo, meticulous and expressive plants and animals by Kawai Gyokudo, Kawasaki Shoko, Katayama Nanpu, and Domoto Insho, and the human figure by Kaburaki Kiyokata and Ito Shinsui. The works of still life by Ogura Yuki and landscape by Kato Toichi are also on display.

The year 2025 marks the 100th year of Showa if the era had continued. We invite you to experience the fresh sensations of the modern Nihonga and the unique characters of each artist.
