Fumio Tsuchida
This exhibition introduces the artistic endeavors of painter Fumio Tsuchida (1901-1973) on the 50th anniversary of his passing this year.

Born in 1901 in Yamagata Prefecture, Tsuchida moved to Tokyo after graduating from a secondary school and studied under Takeji Fujishima at the Kawabata Art School. In 1920, he achieved his first selection in the Western Painting Division of the Japan Art Academy. However, due to the dissolution of the academy's Western Painting Division, he joined the newly established Shunyokai. Fascinated by Ryuzaburo Umehara, Tsuchida participated in the establishment of the Nihon Bijutsuin and exhibited works alongside its founding. In 1954, he became a professor at Musashino Art University, actively contributing as a central artist in the Nitten throughout his career. After retiring in 1972, he intended to dedicate himself to painting in France but fell ill and returned to Japan, passing away the following year.

Although a posthumous exhibition was held in 1974 to commemorate his activities, showcasing Tsuchida's works together has not occurred for almost half a century. The exhibited works will encompass early portraits and interior scenes, reflecting Umehara's influence, as well as landscape paintings that evolved into abstract expressions and geometric compositions. Tsuchida's works underwent diverse transformations, undoubtedly influenced by the rapid changes in the post-war art scene, such as the rise of abstract styles and avant-garde art movements.

Approximately 70 works by Tsuchida from the collection, along with one piece by his wife, Tsugie Tsuchida, who was also active in the Nihon Bijutsuin and Women's Art Association will be presented.
