The Fujifilm Photo Collection was established in 2014 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the founding of Fujifilm Corporation, a company that has continued to support Japanese photographic culture.

From the introduction of photography as an unknown visual experience at the end of the Edo period to the present, many outstanding photographers have been born in Japan. In the course of changing times, they have explored the possibilities of photographic expression and clarified their attitudes and awareness of issues.

This exhibition features silver prints of photographs taken by 101 photographers who are indispensable to the history of Japanese photography, beginning with Felice Beato and Renjo Shimooka, who laid the foundation for the dawn of photography in Japan, and continuing through the Meiji, Taisho, Showa, and Heisei eras, all of whom were highly acclaimed in Japan and abroad.

Now that photography has become more accessible than ever with the spread of digital photography, the hope is that visitors will take a fresh look at the trajectory of Japanese photographic history, which continues to develop, and view the 101 prints that represent the essence of the history of Japanese photography, which reflect the artist's thoughts on the state of photography.
